MONUMENT, Colo.- If simply standing were a talent, then Miguel Dakota stole the night by doing just that. The America's Got Talent contestant from Monument, Colo. had the crowd swooning the minute he walked onto stage.
"You haven't even started yet and people are screaming over you already!" exclaimed Heidi Klum, a judge on the NBC reality competition show.
The 22-year-old's presence held its own, but would his true talent hold a tune with the judges?
"Alright," stated Klum. "Let's hear it."
Dakota was about to find out.
His love for making music started more than a decade ago, when his parents gave him a guitar for his eleventh birthday.
"Ever since then, I've been in love with music and just how you can evoke emotion through music and connect with a crowd," said Dakota.
The Lewis Palmer High School graduate started playing for small crowds. He likes to play at bars and coffee shops around Monument and Colorado Springs.
His family is the "backbone" to his music. His mom is always by his side.
Show producers reached our to Dakota through ReverbNation.com- a social media site for musicians. They asked him to come out to the local audition in Denver. Dakota did. Then, he made it to the stage in New Jersey- standing in front of the judges and thousand of AGT fans.
"I think the part I was a little anxious about was hearing the critiques from the judges," said Dakota.
He was especially nervous about what Howard Stern had say, since the judge is known for his "blunt" comments.
Influenced by jazz and blues, Dakota performed a cover of Alex Clare's "Too Close." When he finished, he couldn't believe what happened next. The crowd roared. Stern stood on his feet, clapping.
"It was such a fun and exhilarating experience... it was amazing," said Dakota, smiling.
No matter how far Dakota goes in the competition, he says this is just the beginning.
"If you love something- and you know that you want to do it- just go for it," said Dakota.
