5 year old hit by race car on Pike's Peak treated, released

The five year old girl hit by a race car at the summit of Pikes Peak during practice races for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has been released from Memorial hospital, treated for non-life threatening injuries.
It happened around 9:30 Friday morning; a race car driver was finishing his warm-ups, crossing the finish line at the summit around 60 mph. The car kept driving through the finish line and into a pike of rocks near the south side of the summit house where the child was playing. Officials still don't know why the car did not stop.
The girl was flown via Memorial Star airlift helicopter to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs; she was released around 5:00 PM.
A second person was flown via helicopter to Penrose hospital after the crash for non-life threatening back injuries; officials say he may have been a passenger in the race car.
News 5 contacted the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb for information on the safety of the course, the cars, and the drivers; they did not return requests for comment.
