One of the most veteran employees at the Colorado Springs Police Department is hanging up the phone. Eva Steadman served 34 years as a 9-1-1 dispatcher, and Monday the police department honored her as she's set to retire on Wednesday.
With more than three decades on the other end of the emergency line, Steadman has seen it all. She worked through the blizzard of 1997 and other natural disasters, helped deliver babies and guided police to catch criminals.
Steadman said being an emergency medical dispatcher can be a tough and stressful job, but it's knowing that she can help someone in a serious, and often life-changing event, that kept her going all of those years.
"If you can be there for someone then great, and I think that's what drives most of us in doing this particular job," said Steadman.
She not only did her job with great care, but Steadman also had some of the highest compliance scores possible, several years at 99%. She was even nominated for Emergency Medical Dispatcher of the year in 1998.
