Kids may be able to overcome their milk and egg allergies, by consuming the very things that make them sick! The technique is called oral immunotherapy, and it involves giving patients small but increasingly higher doses of the food they're allergic to until the immune system learns to tolerate it.
Doctors say more than half of the children in a recent study could consume 5 grams of eggs without having an allergic reaction. They had been given small doses of egg protein over the course of a year.
Doctors also successfully treated children with milk allergies by placing drops of milk under their tongues. They caution, however, this should only be done by a trained pediatric allergist.
