Four Air Force Academy cadets swam out in a riptide in Panama to save three people from drowning. In a separate incident, two cadets gave first aid to a man they saw get hit by a train.
The six cadets credited with saving lives received special recognition from the Air Force this week--they were awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. Five of the cadets were honored in a special ceremony at the Academy. The other is now a second lieutenant.
C1C Joshua Lapso credited instinct, along with Air Force training, for their heroics, "Any one of these people out here would have done the same thing. It's just, we were in the right place at the right time. All the cadets have the same training. They would have reacted similarly."
