STORRS, Conn. - Power-play goals by Paul Weisgarber and Jacques Lamoureux and 24 saves by Jason Torf led Air Force to a 2-1 win over UConn in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. With the win, Air Force improved to 10-9-3 overall and 8-7-1 in the AHA. UConn fell to 7-13-3 overall and 7-8-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first period, Air Force got on the board at 5:38 of the second period when Paul Weisgarber scored on the power play. Kyle DeLaurell made a centering pass from the goal line to Weisgarber in front who scored his team-leading 11th of the season.
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead early in the third period when Lamoureux scored on the power play at 5:21. Carew and DeLaurell took control of the puck on the boards and kicked it out to Lamoureux in the circle. The senior skated into the slot, made a move in front and slid a backhander through the five hole. Just over two minutes later, the Huskies got on the board when Billy Latta scored with a slap shot from the point on the power play. In the final 66 seconds, the Huskies pulled the goaltender in favor of the extra attacker. The Huskies took one shot that was saved by Jason Torf. The game ended when junior captain Scott Mathis cleared the puck out of the zone.
AFA outshot UConn, 32-25, in the game including a 17-5 advantage in the second period. AFA was 2-for-5 on the power play while UConn was 1-for-7. DeLaurell tied his career high with two assists in the game. Weisgarber has now scored a goal in three straight games, tying the longest goal-scoring streak of his career. Lamoureux extended his point-scoring streak to six games and has nine points during the streak. His game-winner was the 15th of his career, a school record.
Air Force and UConn conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 7:05 p.m. ET in Storrs, Conn.
