Air Force falls to RIT, 3-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - RIT scored three goals in the third period and held on for a 3-0 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Saturday at the Frank Ritter Arena in Rochester, N.Y.

With the win, RIT improved to 20-11-1 and 20-5-1 in the AHA. The Tigers clinched the AHA regular-season championship and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. AFA fell to 12-14-6 overall and 12-8-6 in the league. The Falcons are winless in their last six games (0-5-1).

The teams were scoreless after the first period, but RIT had a 12-7 shot advantage. AFA outshot RIT, 5-1, in the first seven minutes, but the Falcons were outshot 11-2 in the final 13 minutes.

The second period was all RIT. The Tigers scored first at the 3:20 mark with a five-on-five goal. Chris Haltigin took a shot from the top of the left circle that went through traffic, hit the inside off the far post and went in for a 1-0 lead. With the teams skating four-on-four, RIT took a 2-0 lead at 10:14. Air Force turned the puck over deep in its own end and Chris Tanev scored with a wrister from the slot. Two minutes later, the Tigers scored on the power play. Just 18 seconds into the man-advantage, Dan Ringwald took a feed from the corner, knocked the puck down with his hand and then sent a wrister over the shoulder of Andrew Volkening.

Air Force started the third period with 61 seconds of power play and had five power-play minutes in the first nine minutes of the third period. However, the Falcons were unable to convert and neither team scored in the third period.

Air Force closes out the regular season, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 26-27, against Sacred Heart at the Cadet Ice Arena.
