Air Force Track and Field weekly notes

The Air Force track and field heads outside this weekend to begin the second half of the season. The majority of the squad will travel to Tempe, Ariz., on March 21-22 for the Baldy Castillo Invitational, while other members of the program will compete at various meets around the country during the Academy's spring break.

 

MEET INFORMATION: BALDY CASTILLO INVITATIONAL

The Baldy Castillo Invitational, which will be held at the Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium, features squads from Arizona State, Air Force, George, Iowa State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Long Beach State, Minnesota (men only), North Dakota State and Oklahoma. Action begins on with the hammer throw and 1500-meter run on Friday, March 21, while the remainder of the events will take place on Saturday, March 22.

 

FRIDAY'S SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

1:00 p.m.: Men's Hammer Throw, Women's Hammer Throw; 7:30 p.m.: Men's 1500-Meter Run, Women's 1500-Meter Run

 

SATURDAY'S SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

10:00 a.m.: Men's Discus Throw, Women's Discus Throw; 11:00 a.m.: Women's Long Jump; 12:00 p.m.: Men's Long Jump; 12:00 p.m. Men's High Jump, Women's High Jump; 12:00 p.m.: Women's Pole Vault, Men's Pole Vault; 1:00 p.m.: Women's 100-Meter Hurdles, Men's 110-Meter Hurdles, 2000-Meter Steeplechase; 2:00 p.m.: Men's Javelin Throw, Women's Javelin Throw; 2:00 p.m.: Men's Shot Put, Women's Shot Put; 2:00 p.m.: 4x100-Meter Relay, 400-Meter Dash; 2:30 p.m.: Men's Triple Jump; 2:30 p.m.: Women's Triple Jump; 2:35 p.m.: 100-Meter Dash, 800-Meter Run, 400-Meter Hurdles, 200-Meter Dash, 3000-Meter Run, 4x400-Meter Relay (with the exception of the opening hurdle events, the men will compete first in all running events)

 

WHO'S BACK FOR THE OUTDOOR SEASON

The Falcons' outdoor roster includes two All-Americans (Zach Perkins, 1500m in 2013; Joey Uhle, pole vault in 2013), two Mountain West champions (Perkins, 1500m in 2013; Alex Lindsay, 800m in 2012), nine additional all-conference selections (Annette Eichenberger, 800m in 2013; Grant Hamilton, shot put in 2013; Garrett Griffin, javelin in 2013; Kassie Gurnell, triple jump in 2013; Blue Kearney, long jump in 2013; David Ptacek, 200m in 2013; Kobi Rex, high jump in 2012-13; Cort Rogers, pole vault in 2012; Tim Urista, javelin in 2012-13), two Academy record holders (Perkins, 1500m; Gurnell, triple jump) and three members of the women's 4x100 relay that set a program standard last year (Gurnell, Naomi Alston, Morgan Malone).

 

LEADING THE WAY

Eight seniors will serve as team captains for the track and field team during the 2014 season. Pole vaulter Elliott Beski, thrower William Kent, middle distance runner Alex Lindsay and sprinter David Ptacek were chose as captains of the men's team, while middle distance runner Annette Eichenberger, jumper Kassie Gurnell, pole vaulter Paige Shirley and javelin thrower Kim Smith were voted to serve as captains of the women's team.

 

HOME SWEET HOME

The Falcons will host three competitions at the Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. Following its Outdoor Combined Events Meet on April 3-4, Air Force will host the third-annual Air Force Relays on April 5. The Falcons will also host the Air Force Twilight Invitational on May 9.

 

LINDEMAN CELEBRATING 25 YEARS WITH THE FALCONS IN 2014

Ralph Lindeman is celebrating his 25th season as Air Force's head coach this season. A 12-time conference coach of the year, Lindeman has guided the men's team to three conference titles in the last five championship seasons. He is joined on the Falcons' coaching staff by associate head coach Scott Steffan, assistant coaches Juli Benson, Ryan Collins, Allen Johnson and Keith Vance, and volunteer coaches Bob Graf, Mark Stanforth and Ron White.

 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

Joey Uhle closed out the indoor season with his third All-America certificate, earning first-team honors by finishing seventh (17'8½") at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 15 in Albuquerque.

 

WHAT'S ON DECK

Air Force remains on the road next weekend, as a select number of Falcons travel to Austin, Texas, for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The 87th-annual meet will take place March 26-29 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
