Air Force women set to visit San Diego State

The Air Force women's basketball team visits San Diego State this Saturday, Jan. 11, for a conference match-up. The game is slated to tip off at 2:00 p.m. (PT) in Viejas Arena.

Last Season: San Diego State swept both contests against Air Force last season, winning a 68-46 decision in San Diego on Feb. 2, while capturing a 73-55 victory at the Academy on March 6.

Sophomore Missy Byrd scored a career-high 17 points, but the Falcons never led in a 77-43 home loss to Fresno State Wednesday evening. Byrd, who was the only Falcon to score in double figures, also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while senior Cherae Medina added seven points and six assists.

Air Force enters this weekend's contest with a 1-12 overall record and 0-3 mark in the Mountain West, following its loss to Fresno State. Junior Jimi Blagowsky is the Falcons' leading scorer on the season with 11.1 points per game, while senior Cherae Medina adds 10.5 points and a team-high 5.1 assists per contest, Meanwhile, sophomore Madeleine Philpot is the Falcons' leading rebounder with 4.0 boards per game.

San Diego State currently holds a 3-9 record on the season and a 0-2 ledger in the Mountain West. The Aztecs are coming off a 73-64 road loss to Boise State.


The Aztecs are led by Cierra Warren, who averages 13.3 points per game, while eight other players average at least 5.0 points per contest. Warren is also the top rebounder for San Diego State with 5.6 rebounds per contest.

Through games of Jan. 8, San Diego State leads the Mountain West in field goal percentage (.427) and rebounding defense (34.7). Meanwhile, in conference games only, the Aztecs lead the league in offensive rebounding percentage (.440), while ranking second in rebounding defense (34.0) and rebounding margin (+6.0).


Individually, Cierra Warren ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage (.548) and 10th in scoring (13.3 ppg), Danesha Long is tied for eighth in free throw percentage (.800) and Khristina Hunter ranks tied for ninth in offensive rebounds per game (2.5).

Sophomore Missy Byrd had the best offensive performance of her career on Wednesday versus Fresno State, tallying a personal-best 17 points. Byrd's previous career high scoring mark of 14 points was set last season at Fresno State.



Mary Crashes the boards...

Despite seeing just 12 minutes of action against Fresno State on Wednesday, freshman Mary Cavanaugh finished second on the team in rebounds, grabbing a career-high six boards. Cavanaugh entered the game with six total rebounds through the first 11 games of her career.



Cherae Dropping the Dimes...

Senior Cherae Medina has averaged 8.3 assists per game over the last three contests to lead the Mountain West in assists in conference games only. Medina now ranks tied for fifth place on the Falcons' Division I career assist list with 199 career assists.



Falcons in the record books...

Senior Cherae Medina and junior Jimi Blagowsky have both recently entered the Falcons' Division I career record books. Medina is currently tied for fifth in Air Force's Division I era in career assists with 199, while ranking ninth in career three-point field goal percentage (.310) and 10th in career three-point field goals made (61). Meanwhile, Blagowsky ranks sixth in career three-point field goal percentage (.333) in the Division I era.
