Researchers studying hair samples from mummies have found that nicotine habits started before 100 B.C., according to a report from NBC News.
The study focused on 56 mummies, all said to be in good condition, from the Chilean town San Pedro de Atacama. Of those 56 mummies, 35 showed signs of long-term nicotine use in addition to snuffing hallucinogens. The report says that both practices were "deeply rooted in the culture of many pre-Hispanic societies."
The study is highlighted in an article on LiveScience.com.
