Arangio family speaks out

The family of Michael Arangio is speaking out Sunday.

About an hour after 24-year-old Arangio broke off communications with the negotiator Saturday during a stand off with Colorado Springs Police, they sent in a robot to check things out and found Arangio dead in an apartment on Whistler Point.

"He is deceased due to a self inflicted gunshot wound," Sgt. David Edmonson told media shortly after on Saturday. The coroner is still confirming that it is Arangio, and the cause of death.

A day later Arangio's family released a statement through a friend, saying:

"The family of Michael Arangio asked me to express their deep heartfelt sorrow for the loss of those young boys. It is impossible to put into words how badly they hurt for their family and friends. No parent should ever have to suffer the loss of the child. The nightmare of this tragic event will live with all of us for the rest of our lives."

Wednesday's shootings are something Judy Hernandez, the great-aunt of Aaron and Wayne Fix, will live with for the rest of her life as well. However, she says she appreciates the comments from the Arangio family.

"These parents have got to be hurting just like Aaron and Wayne's parents are hurting," says Hernandez.

NF5 is hearing more about Arangio; a high school classmate of his from Doherty High School -- who asked not to be named -- tells us Arangio had really changed in the last couple of months, saying he had been "off the wall." He tells NF5 that online is where he first heard Aranigo was involved in Wednesday night's shootings and he says he had heard as early as Thursday morning, hours before police named Arangio a suspect around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Police say they're continuing to investigate, trying to figure out what happened Wednesday night; in the mean time a city that has dealt with a lot of violence in the last few days is trying to return to normal.
