FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - An embattled Arizona sheriff says the state's top prosecutor has agreed to conduct a comprehensive independent investigation into allegations made against him and his office.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu asked the Gila County sheriff's office and that county attorney's office earlier Tuesday to look into claims made by a Mexican immigrant that he once dated.
Babeu says the two agencies don't have the resources to conduct the probe so Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne has agreed to take it.
Babeu on Saturday acknowledged he is gay after the former boyfriend alleged he was threatened with deportation if he ever exposed their past relationship.
Babeu is seeking the Republican nomination for a congressional seat.
