Army: Returning Ft Carson troops had fewer problems

The Army says soldiers who returned to Fort Carson from Afghanistan this spring had fewer behavior problems and were more likely to seek help than soldiers on previous combat tours.

Maj. Gen. David G. Perkins, the post's commander, said Thursday that soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team had more psychological screenings than previous units.

The brigade saw heavy combat in its most recent tour, and 39 of its soldiers died. After previous deployments to Iraq, soldiers from the same brigade were implicated in 11 slayings in the U.S. That prompted an Army study that said combat trauma may have triggered the violence.

Perkins says the brigade has undergone significant turnover in personnel since then.
