Some Aspen leaders hope the community can raise enough money to buy a University of Colorado conference center in their resort town and save it from being demolished to clear the way for development.
CU's medical school says it needs to sell the property because it costs up to $200,000 a year to operate. CU says a private buyer has expressed interest in the 2.2-acre site, but only if the 12,000-square-foot conference center is torn down. The center was designed by Harry Weese.
Stan Clauson, a member of the board of the Aspen Chamber Resort Association, calls it a masterpiece by a significant architect. CU has expressed interest in working with Aspen groups to sell them the property and avoid demolishing the building.
