Assault charge now a murder charge

An assault charge has been increased to a murder charge in the death of a 60 year-old-man in Pueblo.

Police believe Joe Espinoza, 41, beat Ted Gomez, 60 over a missing necklace.  Espinoza apparently thought Gomez had taken it.  That happened on February 27.  The next day Gomez was hospitalized with head injuries.  He died yesterday at St. Mary Corwin Hospital.

Espinoza was arrested Saturday on an assault charge.  Today that was changed to a 1st degree murder charge.  Espinoza's bond has been set at $1,000,000.

According to police the necklace was later found.  It had apparently not been stolen.
