All right, Rockies fans. Remember the name, Cory Voss. He could soon be baseball's next big name. And he just happens to be our latest Loaf 'N Jug Aquafina Athlete of the Week.
Cory is just about to graduate from Pueblo South High School. The kid can absolutely mash. He made opposing pitchers cower in fear with his .587 batting average. For you baseball stat geeks out there, his OPS (on base-plus-slugging percentage) was a Barry Bonds-like 1.7.
Cory plays catcher will suit up next year for the University of New Mexico on a full ride scholarship. After that, he hopes to follow in the footsteps of some of his favorite big league players.
"I've never really been the biggest guy," said Cory. "I've always looked up to people like Dustin Pedroia. More recently, Wilin Rosario is somebody that's my favorite player right now. I kind of try to mold myself after him catching and hitting."
Cory says a number of teams have talked to him about potentially getting picked in next month's MLB draft. He also played on the Rockies scout team in the fall, which is reserved for the best players in the state. There are too many other awards and stats to mention. You get the picture. This kid is a stud.
