A 20 year old suspect is in the hospital with life threatening injuries after jumping out of a police car and into moving traffic on southbound I-25. It started just before 3:00 at the Eagle Ridge apartment complex off Vindicator on the cities northeast side.
Bail bondsman Will Mackins was after 20 year old John Winkler for failing to appear on a felony theft case. SWAT was also after him for another felony. Working together, they found Winkler outside of an apartment. "We got up on him and identified that it was him." explains Mackins, "He got a little antsy like he was getting ready to run so we had to restrain him and put him in handcuffs." That's when Winkler said something that stood out to Mackins. "As we put him in handcuffs he did mention that he wanted to die." says Mackins.
Winkler was taken into custody and placed in the front seat of an unmarked police car. The car, traveling about 60 miles an hour hit southbound I-25 near Fontanero when Winkler made a move. "He was handcuffed behind his back and seat belted in the vehicle." explains Sgt. Steve Noblitt with CSPD, "He was able to unbuckle himself and open the car door and jump out of the police vehicle " After rolling several feet, Winkler got up and ran. "He got up and began to run." says Noblitt, "Then he was struck by another southbound vehicle." Winkler wound up in the hospital. The driver of the car that hit him was also taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
As far as the placement of the suspect in the front seat of the police vehicle, Colorado Springs Police tell us that it's standard operating procedure when putting a suspect in an unmarked car that doesn't have a cage on it.
