DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Brad Malone to an entry-level contract after he finished up his senior season at North Dakota.
Malone will join the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League for the start of the playoffs.
A fourth-round pick in 2007, Malone is coming off a season in which he helped the Fighting Sioux to the NCAA Frozen Four. He had 40 points and a team-high 108 penalty minutes in 43 contests.
Malone, 21, also delivered the crushing check in an Oct. 30 game at North Dakota that left University of Denver's Jesse Martin with a broken neck.
Hockey runs in Malone's family as his uncle, Greg, suited up for 11 seasons in the NHL, while his cousin, Ryan, plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
