ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - The Washington Capitals have added experience to their defense by acquiring Scott Hannan in a trade that sends forward Tomas Fleischmann to the Colorado Avalanche.
The 31-year-old Hannan is in his 12th NHL season, mostly with the San Jose Sharks, who drafted him in the first round in 1997. He joined Colorado as a free agent in 2007, signing a four-year, $18 million contract that expires after this season.
Entering Tuesday, the Capitals have the most points in the NHL and are second in goals with 86, but they have allowed 68, which ranks 17th in the 30-team league.
Fleischmann has four goals and six assists this season, his sixth in the NHL, all with Washington. He scored a career-high 23 goals in 2009-10.
