UPDATE: Lake Pueblo swim beach to reopen

Officials at Lake Pueblo say the Rock Canyon swim beach will reopen at 11:00 a.m. Friday.

The swim beach had been closed earlier this week because of high levels of E. coli. Tests ran on the water Wednesday came back with lower levels of E. coli, so it is now safe to swim in the water.

A swim beach in Pueblo has been shut down after testing positive for high levels of E. coli. The Rock Canyon Swim Beach is temporarily closed starting Aug. 5. The State Parks Department says our recent heavy rain showers have washed bacteria into the beach.

The Pueblo City-County Health Department says there was a similar problem several years ago. "We had an outbreak--It was a type of bacteria that causes sudden onset on diarrhea, cramps, sometimes bloody diarrhea and we had many cases in Pueblo," said Dr. Chris Nevin-Woods, Executive Director of the Pueblo City-County Health Department.

If you recently swam at the beach and experienced those symptoms, contact your doctor.

The State Parks Department says it routinely checks the E. coli levels at the beach, to prevent another outbreak. No word on when the swim area will re-open.
