Balink resigns from Maes campaign

DENVER (AP) - The campaign treasurer for embattled Colorado gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes has resigned three weeks into the job.

Maes' campaign confirmed Thursday that treasurer Bob Balink has quit as volunteer treasurer. Maes spokesman Nate Strauch says that Balink resigned because of a long commute from El Paso County, not because of disagreements with the campaign. The treasurer started worked for the Republican candidate in mid-August.

Maes has struggled to keep his books straight since starting his campaign last year. Last month Maes paid a $17,500 fine for campaign finance violations. The violations included improper donations and mileage reimbursements. Maes blamed the errors on the fact he's never run for office before.
