Bark-beetle damage aimed in bill

Sen. Mark Udall is sponsoring a bill aimed at helping Colorado and other Western states to deal with the damage by tiny beetles that have killed millions of acres of pine trees across the region.

The Colorado Democrat will join state Sen. Dan Gibbs on a conference call with reporters Wednesday after a hearing on the bill.

Gibbs traveled to Washington in March to testify on the bill and the wildfire threat posed by the large tracts of beetle-killed trees. He represents Summit County, which has been hit hard by the bark-beetle epidemic.

The earlier hearing was canceled after Republicans angry over the passage of health insurance reform legislation blocked it.
