COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A husband and wife who have greeted thousands of hikers on Pikes Peak are leaving the mountain.
Neal and Teresa Taylor have served as the caretakers at Barr Camp - halfway up the Pikes Peak trail - for eight years. Our news partners at the Gazette reported Monday that they're stepping down to take new jobs.
The camp was built a century ago as an overnight stop for burro trips. The Taylors hosted hikers on overnight hiking trips, feeding them spaghetti and pancakes. The camp has no showers, telephones or electricity but Neal Taylor said the distance from civilization seemed to help strangers get to know each other better.
Teresa Taylor is graduating from Colorado College and will work there. Her husband will be the caretaker at a research center on the mountain.(Photo: Christian Murdock/The Gazette)
