Bent's Fort plans 50th celebration

Bent's Old Fort will commemorate 50 years as a national historic site this weekend.  President Eisenhower signed the law on June 3, 1960.

All events listed below are free and open to the public. 

Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Koshare Indian Museum in La Junta, Colorado, at 18th St.& Santa Fe

  • 3:00 p.m. The Prehistory and Establishment of Bent's Fort
  • 4:00 Plains Indian History and Bent's Fort
  • 5:00 Hispanic History and Bent's Fort
  • 7:00 Bent's Fort Reception - the public is invited
  • 8:00 Bent's Fort Goes to the Movies - Local actors and support staff tell stories of their experiences with the cinema

      7-10:00 am Trappers Ride from La Junta to Bent's Old Fort - John Carson (Kit's great-grandson) and trappers

  • 9:00 a.m. Cannon salute to all
  • 9:30 Drawings for stagecoach rides begin - picnic area
  • 10:00 Daughters of the American Revolution re-enactment of the dedication of the 1912 Bent's Fort Marker
  • 11:00 Women of the Frontier - with Emmy-award winning designer Cathy Smith -event tent
  • 11:30 Men's Clothing of the American Fur Trade - event tent
  • 12:00 - 3:00 Artifacts from the Fort - exhibit with archeologist Richard Carrillo - fort, upper level
  • 12:45 p.m Cannon salute to all
  • 1:00 The Movers and Shakers Get it Done: Establishment of a National Historic Site featuring Merrill Eisenhower Atwater and Holly Arnold Kinney
  • 2:00 Reconstruction of Bent's Fort - with original contractor Emil Gimeno, and the movie "They Came to Build"
  • 3:00 "The Demise of Tonto or Hollywood Meets the Sioux Nation" - Cathy Smith-event tent
  • 4:00 Koshare and Northern Arapaho dance groups - fort plaza
  • 4:30 Drawing for a 27 star flag that has flown over Bent's Fort - plaza
  • 5:30 Fort Closes
  • 7:30 Fort reopens for evening event
  • 7:45 Cannon Salute to all
  • 8:00 Fandango led by Dr. Lorenzo Trujillo and the Southwest Musicians
