A measure that would make masturbating in public a more serious crime won a key vote in the Colorado Legislature.
Rep. Steve King's bill would move public masturbation to the state's public-exposure laws, making it a misdemeanor crime that could require those convicted to be placed on the state's sexual-offender registry. King, a Republican from Grand Junction, also wants to move nonsexual exposure of the genitals, such as streaking or urinating in public, to the less serious indecency statutes, making them a petty offense punishable by a mere fine.
Currently, the law is the other way around. The bill won approval Friday from a committee and now moves to the House for a full debate.
