Chickens injected with the 1918 and 2009 H1N1 swine flu virus strains showed no flu symptoms, nor did they have any tissue damage. The 1918 virus was also tried on ducks, which also stayed healthy.

The study's authors was trying to determine if birds played any role in the spread of the disease.

The study was published in the February issue of the Journal of General Virology.
