Black Hills moving on power plant construction

Construction in underway on two new natural gas power plants near the Pueblo Memorial Airport. Black Hills Energy is spending more than $400 million to build the complex, which is located off of Pete Jimenez Parkway.

On Tuesday, Pueblo County Commissioners approved an incentive agreement with the energy company. Black Hills Energy will give the county $2.4 million up front, in lieu of property taxes over the next ten years. "So it's win win for the county, the county gets an injection of cash into their general fund and we're able to move forward with the project," said Christopher Burke, Black Hills Energy Vice President of Operations.

Black Hills Energy has hired 200 construction workers to build the plants, with plans to hire an additional 200 during the peak of construction.

Burke says the plants should be operational by the beginning of 2012.
