Blaze along NM-Colo. destroys 14 structures

A wildfire racing across rugged terrain along the New Mexico-Colorado border has charred more than 25,000 acres and has destroyed more than a dozen structures.

Fire officials say 14 structures, including outbuildings and uninhabited hunting cabins, have burned. Officials say none of the structures were primary residences.

Crews were focusing Wednesday morning on the southern and eastern flanks of the fire. They hoped to make progress since winds were expected to remain light throughout the day.

Hundreds of residents who live north and east of Raton remained out of their homes Wednesday. Fire officials planned to assess whether residents would be able to return when conditions are safe in the next couple of days.

A public meeting with fire officials is planned at Raton High
School beginning at noon.
