Fountain Mesa Road was closed 4:30 am Sunday morning due to what appeared to be hazardous materials discovered in the roadway.
A Fountain Police Officer patrolling along Fountain Mesa Rd came upon a motorist who was stopped in their car in the 8200 block of the roadway due to a large amount of what appeared to be household trash covering the street.
The motorist reported that their vehicle had been struck by the trash and stopped. The officer began to clear the roadway from trash when he discovered a bleach bottle that appeared to be swollen and pressurized. The officer immediately closed the roadway with additional units called to the scene. Fountain Fire Department and the Colorado Springs, Metro Bomb Squad Unit were also called to the scene.
Fountain Mesa Rd. was closed between Hurley Dr. and Village Meadows Drive. Eventually Bomb Squad and Fire crews rendered the bleach bottle safe and re-opened the roadway at about 7:30 am.
It has been reported that four juveniles are suspected of throwing the trash into the roadway. No arrests have been made, pending the results of the contents of the bottle. There were no injures reported. An investigation is continuing to establish the contents of the bottle.
