Texas' top criminal judge has put her career in the hands of a board deciding whether to remove her from the bench for closing her court before a death row inmate's
attorneys filed a last-minute appeal.
Judge Sharon Keller appeared Friday before the State Commission on Judicial Conduct on charges she denied the inmate the chance appeal hours before his 2007 execution. The commission adjourned a five-hour hearing without a ruling and announced no timetable for a decision. Keller is the presiding judge of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. A prosecutors says she needs to accept accountability as the "public face" of justice in Texas.
Keller has asked the panel to side with a report last year that said "the public humiliation she has surely suffered" is sanction enough.
