Body of a young girl in Monument identified

Genesis Sims would have been nine years old. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and a private lab have confirmed the dead body found in a basement crawl space in Monument in May is Genesis. The lab results don't say how long she's been dead.

Neighbors say the family moved out of the home more than a year ago.

Jopetia Garretson is Genesis' mom. She talked with News First 5 on the phone from her home in New Jersey. Garretson says Genesis loved being a big sister and a little girl.

"That was her thing: Dora, school, eat, and ice cream sandwiches," says Garretson.

"I cried right away," adds Garretson. "You took one of the best things that ever happened to me. She was too sweet."

Garretson says the last time she saw her daughter was 2007, when she lost joint custody.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is looking for Monique Lynch and Genesis's father, Hanif Sims, as people of interest, not naming them as suspects.

"Lacking cause of death and manner of death from the Coroner's Office, there are still some questions that are unanswered," says Lt. Lari Sevene, spokesperson for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

Lynch sent News First 5 a message on Facebook saying, "I don't know what happened. I was scared and panicked. I was dealing with a lot of things. I would love to talk to police about what happened but I don't know. I want to ask them some questions."

Authorities have yet to hear from her or Sims.

Garretson says she's physically sick over her daughter's death.

"I'm just praying that her spirit knows that I never forgot her and never gave up on her. And I have proof of that. I never gave up on her," says Garretson.

The Lewis-Palmer School District tells me, she was enrolled at Palmer Lake Elementary only for a few weeks. Her father then disenrolled her, saying she was going to be home schooled.

El Paso County Sheriff's detectives believe Lynch and Sims are in the Los Angeles area. Anyone with information about exact location is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 719-390-5555.
