Bombings kill 39 in and around Iraqi capital

BAGHDAD (AP) - Iraqi officials now say at least 11 explosions have torn through predominantly Shiite Muslim areas in and around Baghdad on Sunday, killing at least 39 people.

In the day's deadliest attack, police say a car bomb exploded inside an auto shop, killing seven people and wounding 14 others.

The attacks are part of escalating violence since a deadly security crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in April. The bloodshed in the country has reached heights unseen since the country teetered on the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

There's been no claim of responsibility, but insurgent groups frequently target civilians in public areas in an attempt to undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government and stir up sectarian tensions.
