Boulder County residents nix higher taxes

Boulder County residents have rejected paying a yearly fee to help pay to repave more than 150 miles of roads in about 100 rural subdivisions.
The county says 58 percent of the 5,236 residents who responded opposed the idea of being charged $130 a year for 15 years. The county sent nonbinding advisory ballots to the owners of about 10,600 properties.
County officials estimate it would cost $22 million to improve the roads over five years and as much as $25 million over 15 years.
County policy provides for routine maintenance of residential subdivisions' paved roads but holds the subdivisions responsible for repaving or reconstruction.
