Boy seriously injured in pit bull attack in Commerce City, woman arrested

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) -A 51-year-old woman was arrested after her dog attacked a 19-month-old boy in a parking lot near a grocery store in Commerce City.

Sue Tacket, the pit bull's owner, was charged with unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog since the breed is illegal to own in the county. She was transported to the Adams County Detention Facility.

Police say the 90-pound dog was tied up to a pole Sunday night when the boy approached it to pet it. The dog attacked the child, who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries to his face and neck.  Police spokesman Chris Dickey says dog latched onto his face.

He is expected to survive.

Officers restrained the dog but it continued to fight. It was taken to an animal shelter but officials say the dog died of asphyxiation during the restraint process.

The attack happened at a parking lot near a supermarket where the boy was staying with a group of transients traveling across the country. Police say the dog's owner was also staying there but didn't know members of the boy's group.
