BREAKING: Florence mayor found dead

Florence Mayor Charles Giebler was found dead at his home Friday afternoon.

An employee discovered Giebler around 3:00 p.m. at his house on Robinson and 3rd.

Giebler was unmarried and owned a restaurant and guitar business.

Police are on the scene. His cause of death is unknown.

The mayor pro tem resigned last week.

News 5 has obtained a statement from the Florence City Councilors which reads, "[We] would like to express with deep regret and sorry, the loss of our friend and Mayor, Charles Geibler. His easy going demeanor, witty sense of humor and outgoing nature will be sorely missed. He was a true citizen of Florence, who always put his community first. We are grateful for the opportunity to have spent time and got to know him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as we come to terms with this great loss. May he rest in peace."

Acccording to his bio page from the city of Florence, Charles leaves behind a son, Bryan, who pilots helictopters for the U.S. Air Force and a daughter, Amanda, who works as a research scientist for the C.D.C. in Atlanta.
