The Colorado Springs Conservatory (CSC) is bringing the Broadway hit Gypsy to the Bon Vivant Theater on the UCCS campus from June 17 through 19.
The musical is loosely based on the life of 1930's burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee and focuses on her mother, Rose, the ultimate stage mother who is always dreaming of ways for her daughters to make it big. CSC Executive Director Linda Weise will portray Momma Rose along with Jon Medved as "Pop", Nasit Ari as "Mr. Goldstone", CSC alumnus Lindzey Martucci a.k.a. Lola Spritfire as "Tessi Tora", the comedic burlesque queen and surprise community members.
The production will be directed by the magical Billie McBride, who has performed in Gypsy six times, four with Angela Lansbury and directed it four times, the last time at the Conservatory 10 years ago.
This production/revival will host a cast of students, alumni, faculty and community members. The troupe of lively burlesque dancers, who are an intrinsic part of Gypsy's young life, will include regional burlesque star and CSC alumnus 'Lola Spitfire' and Ms. Lindzey Martucci. The band is comprised of CSC alumni who will return from college to play this incredible score by Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne.
Gypsy was selected for CSC's annual summer production because it offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the talents of the students through song, dance and acting. Some of the toe-tapping standards the audience will enjoy include "Small World," "Everything's Coming up Roses," "You'll Never Get Away from Me," and "Let Me Entertain You."
