Building boom 'Above the Clouds'

A building boom is under way in the City Above the Clouds.  Woodland Park is experiencing a surge in commercial construction not seen in decades.  "Woodland Park is rebounding from the recession and showing that there is great investment interest here in the community," said city Planning Director Sally Riley. A 22,000-square-foot new home for Woodland Hardware and Rental is prominently under construction just off Highway 24 in downtown.  It covers two acres of what will ultimately be a ten-acre commercial development called Woodland Station. Charis Bible College is also under construction on the west end of town off of Trout Creek Road.  The college is expected to open for the Spring Semester in January 2014 with around 500 students.  Ultimately, it could serve up to 3,000 students.  To accommodate the influx, a new apartment complex will break ground next month along Sheridan Avenue, west of the Safeway.  The 168-unit, three-story complex called Trail Ridge will provide affordable housing to students, teachers, and others in Woodland Park who might otherwise not be able to afford a home and would be forced to commute from Colorado Springs.  "Only about 10 percent of our housing stock is multi-family," Riley said. "It does provide an option for our workforce that does not reside here, but are commuting, to begin to live and establish their residence here."
