WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Herman Cain says some people are trying to undermine him because they don't want a businessman to be nominated or elected president.
But Republican voters have denied the presidential nomination to businessmen for 70 years.
And 1928 was the last time Americans elected a president who wasn't a war hero or who had never held elected office. Cain fits that description.
It's certainly possible that voters' attitudes are changing and Cain might surprise pundits. But he would have to defy decades of political history.
So would three other GOP contenders who are current or former House members. Americans haven't elected a president directly from the House since 1880.
