Southern California was pounded by a severe thunderstorm.
The National Weather Service says a storm capable of quarter-sized hail, winds over 60 mph and dangerous lightning passed over the Palmdale area Tuesday night.
To the south, Long Beach saw more than a half-inch of rainfall Tuesday, easily surpassing a 31-year-old record.
Heavy rains also made roads and streams dangerous in San Diego and Orange counties. The San Diego Union-Tribune says more than 2 inches of rain fell on parts of San Diego County in what has become the wettest October since 2004, and a drenched Interstate 15 was shut down for several hours because of a big-rig crash.
