The El Paso County ban on camping on county owned land took effect today, June 1.

It mirrors a camping ban that took effect in March for public land within the City of Colorado Springs. Executive Director Bob Holmes of Homeward Pikes Peak noted, "Now that we have a uniform set of laws that govern camping it will be easier for police and it will be better for campers because they won't be dealing with two different laws."

Sheriff Terry Maketa has said his deputies will follow the same procedures used by Springs police. Since passage of the new county ordinance deputies have been actively warning campers that they can no longer set up "living accommodations" on county property. Maketa told the Commissioners he expects there will be very few summonses written for violations because most campers move voluntarily once they understand the new rules.
