Cancer cases and deaths falling in U.S.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. But while the very word strikes fear into any patient diagnosed with the disease, amazing strides have been made toward treatment and cures.

An assessment of cancer trends produced by the U.S. National Cancer Institute, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries found that both new cases and deaths have fallen dramatically.

Deaths attributed to cancer decreased 1.6 percent a year from 2001 to 2006.

The reasons for the improving numbers--early detection, better treatments and prevention due to cancer awareness campaigns.
