Canon City baby sitter accused of assaulting 6 children

A Canon City man is accused of sexually assaulting a half dozen children during the past year, some of whom he babysat for. Samuel T. Dobbs, Jr., 28, is charged with dozen felony counts of sexual assault on a child and sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust. The victim's ages range from 4 to 9 years old.

The mother of three of the victims says her daughter was the first to come forward. She asked us to conceal her identity to protect her children.

"First words that she said was 'mom something happened but you won't believe me' and as soon as she said that I think I already knew, I just didn't know who," she said.

She explained that Dobbs had been a house guest and later became their baby sitter. At first, she felt like Dobbs was someone she could trust and that her children liked him from the start.

"We gave him an opportunity and thought he was helping us out and it came back to hurt us more than it helped us."

In the arrest warrant, Dobbs first denies the accusations. He later admitted to Canon City Police Department Detective Derek Irvine that he "licked his fingers" and touched the victim's genitals and later placed her hand on him.

Toward the end of the interview he said "feels dead now," and "wants to die with a clear conscious."

As the investigation unfolded, more children came forward with accusations of abuse on different occasions during the past year.

Investigators uncovered a previous case filed in May of 2010 in which an 8 year old girl accused Dobbs of touching her while she sat on his lap playing video games. CCPD Captian Allen Cooper says the department was able to bring closure to that case.

Dobbs was arrested May 9, 2011. Two days earlier he was assaulted by the parents of one of the alleged victims. His next court is scheduled for Thursday.
