Car accidents involving bears in 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS - There were 17 bears or bear cubs hit and killed on highways and roads in the El Paso and Teller Counties last year. News 5 reviewed reports filed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officers to create this map of where those accidents happened.

Eight of the 17 accidents involving bears happened along US 24 between Manitou Springs and Woodland Park. Wildlife managers say there is a robust bear population in Colorado and unsecured trash cans in the Pikes Peak Region are helping fuel the population growth.

Tonight on News 5, we'll hear what the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officers think should be done to better control the wild bear population.
