A car knocked over a gas meter in Palmer Lake around 6:30 Monday morning, triggering a tense hour for area residents.

A vehicle apparently slid on ice and hit the natural gas meter, causing a leak at Glen and Hillside. The meter spewed natural gas for about an hour and the smell from the gas was evident up to a quarter mile away. The Palmer Lake Police Department used their emergency call system to notify area residents to stay inside and not operate any electrical devices. They then waited for a crew from Black Hills Energy to shut the line down.

No injuries were reported.
