Car-sized boulder crashes down on I-70

NEAR GLENWOOD SPRINGS, COLO. - CDOT crews are working to clear a giant boulder that crashed down onto I-70.

The rock, which is the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, came crashing down in Glenwood Canyon, about 2 miles west of Hanging Lakes Tunnel at mile marker 122.9. The rock caused only minor roadway damage (a 1-foot wide pothole) and luckily did not hit any cars.

The outside right westbound lane is currently closed and both westbound lanes will be closed only intermittently later as crews haul the rock pieces away and patch the hole.

CDOT rockfall specialists are on site to determine if any follow up work is necessary.
