No one knows how a tabby from New Mexico wound up in Chicago, but lots of people have a role in a happy ending of the story of Charles the cat. He was picked up a stray but was spared when staff at Chicago Animal Care and Control found a microchip between his shoulders and used it to contact his owner, Robin Alex of Albuquerque.

Alex was overjoyed to hear that Charles had been found, but said she could not afford a round-trip flight to Chicago to rescue her straying pet. She feared he might be euthanized.

But Good Samaritans have stepped forth. A business is donating a carrier and American Airlines is waiving its pet fee for Charles.

He's said to be in good condition.
