Prosecutors have formally filed charges against a man suspected of mangling a shopper's finger while stealing an iPad in a bag entangled with the victim's hand.

The Denver district attorney's office said Wednesday that 20-year-old Brandon Darnell Smith faces charges of robbery and assault. Smith hasn't entered a plea. He's being held under $200,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Smith is accused of yanking the shopping bag from 59-year-old Bill Jordan on April 22. A cord from the bag was wrapped around Jordan's left hand. Doctors amputated part of Jordan's pinky finger because the flesh was stripped to the bone.

Jordan had just bought the iPad at a Denver mall.
