Child pornography charges added in Jessica Ridgeway case

According to our partners in Denver, KUSA, the preliminary hearing for the teen suspect accused of killing a 10-year-old Westminster girl and attacking a jogger in May is set to begin Friday morning.

Just half-an-hour before the hearing was set to start, 9NEWS learned three additional charges of "sexual exploitation of a child" were added against the suspect.

Austin Sigg, 17, will be in a Jefferson County courtroom at 8:30 a.m. to hear the evidence against him.

According to court documents, Sigg "unlawfully, feloniously and knowingly possessed or controlled sexually exploitative ... video, video tape or motion picture qualifying as sexually exploitative material."

The Colorado Supreme Court overturned a judge's decision to close the hearing.

In an opinion issued Thursday, justices sided with media organizations who argued that the judge failed to show that holding the hearing in public would jeopardize Austin Sigg's right to a fair trial or consider other ways to protect Sigg's rights without shutting out the public.

Judge Stephen Munsinger in December said he closed the hearing because he wanted to ensure a fair trial and to protect the privacy of victims and their families.

Media organizations including appealed to the Colorado Supreme Court.

Sigg is accused of kidnapping and killing Jessica Ridgeway in October 2012. Sigg faces 22 charges, however some of the charges are expected to be dismissed. It is unknown at this time which ones.
