Colorado Springs city employees may face more layoffs

Between 150-200 Colorado Springs city employees are being told they could be laid off, says a spokeswoman for the city. The positions may be cut to help balance the 2010 budget.

Department heads have been meeting with the employees over the past few weeks, says Sue Skiffington-Blumberg. "This way they're not surprised when the budget comes out and is delivered to council in early October," she said. "They're not hearing it first from the media, with all due respect, they're hearing it first from their department head and understand what's going on."

Skiffington-Blumberg says they include about 25 cadets at the police academy, 22 at the fire department and 130 other employees. These numbers are not fina - more like a worst case scenario. The city is also in the process of asking for voluntary retirements, which could affect them.

The city manager is expected to give her recommended budget to City Council on Oct. 9.
