The Colorado Springs City Council voted Tuesday afternoon to buy Section 16, a popular open space area on the west side of the city.
The land has been leased by the city since the 1970s. The City Council agreed to spend $4 million for the land. Most of that comes from the Trails and Open Space fund, the rest is from donations and grants. The Trails and Open Space money comes from a tax and must be used for outdoor recreation.
The city had to make a decision because the owner of the land planned to raise the price of the lease dramatically.
